UCLA Assistant Coach Arrested on Burglary Charges

by Dominick Evans

Eric Scott, UCLA Assistant CoachWhen I think about sports, my first thought is that those involved must be criminals. From there I deduce that the most common thing to do if you are in sports is to pull a Winona Ryder and steal something. I’m sure you think the same thing, right? Of course not! In truth, it consistently surprises me when athletes, coaches, and even sports officials (such as referees) get busted. My thought is that these individuals have it made, so why would they jeopardize that?

With that in mind, we need to ask Eric Scott, an assistant coach for UCLA, what the heck he was thinking. When residents of L.A. turned on station KCBS-2 on Wednesday morning, they were greeted with a picture of Scott’s smiling face and the news he had been arrested with two other men on suspicion of burglary. I was thinking, on my off day, I’d go out and break into a few houses, too. Think they’d notice the wheelchair skid marks?

Regardless, Scott won’t be into work today or perhaps ever again depending on what happens when he faces the judge. In one fell swoop he lost his promising career as an assistant coach and the possibility of any future endeavors in the coaching world, because breaking into a house and stealing something or things was worth it. The wide receiver coach seems to be a part of an open and shut case with Scott looking mighty guilty.

He and his “thief-buddies” were engaged in the act of burglarizing a house that was located in Norwalk, in the 1100 block of Pioneer Boulevard. Police found the three after receiving and responding to a 911 call. While the fate of his buddies, Jesus DeAlba and Timothy Williams was not mentioned, Scott had the money to be released on $50,000 bail after his arrest. He spent a little over eight hours at the police station having been arrested at 1:07 PM and released around 9:25 PM.

Scott, who is 32 years old, was hired on for the upcoming season. However, it was announced late yesterday that Scott was being placed on administrative leave pending an investigation not only by the police but by officials for UCLA. Until then, he’ll have to sit and stew over whether his actions were really worth it.
