Detroit Wins Second in Series, Third in a Row

by

Magglio Ordonez gets three RBIsThe Minnesota Twins didn’t have a chance with Magglio Ordoñez in the game tonight. The Venezuelan batting wonder is responsible for all three RBIs for the evening (It’s truly no wonder he’s batting .419 against Twins pitcher Santana). Without him, the Tigers would not have won their second game at the Metrodome in Minneapolis with a score of 3-2. In this series, the scores have been close, with just two games played against the Twins. In fact, yesterday’s game was also just one point apart, with the Tigers winning 1-0.

Marcus Thames made an amazing catch which saved the game in the 8th inning. Had Thames not caught the ball, the Tigers might be looking at a different outcome for the game. Of course, nothing comes without sacrifice. Thames was immediately taken out of the game due to an unspecified injury to his left hamstring. Though it is being said it was nothing more than a cramp, there has been no official confirmation on that. Curtis Granderson, baseball’s triple king (he’s got 16 this year, leading all of baseball by six), took over for Rayburn in center who took over for Thames in left field in the 9th inning.

The “young’un” Miller pitched tonight, and let’s just say that he got in more than one sticky spot with bases loaded in the fifth and two outs. Luckily, Andrew saved the inning Johan Santana pitched well but not good enoughby throwing a 1-2-3 out. In the sixth, Jim Leyland decided to send in Todd Jones, who has saved 25 out of his past 29 games.

The pitcher for the Twins, Johan Santana did well enough to stay in through the eighth inning, but not well enough to win the game. The primary trouble seemed to be with the Twins batters who could get on base but couldn’t do much of anything once there. Santana threw a record high for the season with 118 pitches.

Tomorrow, the Tigers play their third game in the series at 12:30, with Jeremy Bonderman pitching. You can watch the game on FSN Detroit (channels may differ depending on where you live). They will play with the hope of maintaining their two game lead over the Cleveland Indians.

Update: In Jim Leyland’s post game commentary, he mentioned that Marcus Thames was not doing very well. I’ll keep you up to date on Thames injury as information becomes available.
