After 13 Wins Tiger Still Keeps Going

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Tiger Woods PGA ChampThere is big news in the golfing world. Tiger Woods has just won his 13th title. I’m sure all of you golf fans are enthralled with the Tiger. After failing to win in Scotland (perhaps he was too focused on becoming a Daddy?), Tiger still managed to win the PGA Championship. His fierce win was a surprise to golfing fans despite being deemed one of the greatest golfers in the game by players and fans alike.

Things looked grim for Tiger on the back nine. At one point he had a five point lead. However, that diminished to where he led by just one. Tiger was probably inspired to keep going and win by the presence of his little girl, Sam Alexis, and his wife, Elin. At just two months old, little Sam Woods has finally gotten the chance to see Daddy as a victor. The doting Papa said the experience was surreal and gave him “chills” knowing his baby was waiting for him to come to the scorer’s tent to see them after the victory.

Big D’s Daily Sports Run Down – July 20, 2007

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

Detroit Tigers Pitcher Kenny RogersAfter a few days break from my daily sports run down due to life really giving me a sharp kick, it’s back to the grind. So, what did we miss during my brief hiatus? Scandals abound like crazy in the sporting world. From Cycling to Basketball, Friday, July 20, 2007 was not a good day in the vast majority of the world’s top sporting organizations.

Baseball

Cleveland and Detroit Battle it Out for First Place – The Central Division of the American League has been heating up. With just a half game lead over the Cleveland Indians going into the second half of regular season, Detroit and Cleveland have been in a constant battle to see who will be number one. While Detroit remains just barely ahead of Cleveland, Detroit’s catastrophic 10-2 loss to Kansas City after a four game winning streak on Friday thrust Cleveland (who beat the Rangers 3-2) one step closer to taking over the top spot and kicking Detroit down to second place. My Tigers better hustle and win their next game if they want to remain in first place not only for the Central Division, but for the American League as a whole.

Baseball

Bonds Bombs in Entire Dodgers Series, Losing Streak Continues Onward– Barry Bonds, just five home runs away from beating the home run record of Henry “Hank” Aaron (a true ball player who didn’t have to use steroids to hit 756 home runs – but don’t get me started on how unfair I think this is), is in a slump. Fellow Giants short-stop, Omar Vizquel, said the slugger just hasn’t been the same since he had an All Star Game party, playing host until the wee hours of the morning, a week and a half ago.

Angel Cabrera Edges Tiger, Wins U.S. Open

Monday, June 18th, 2007

It’s not unusual for PGA players to cringe going into a Sunday with Tiger Woods not far off the lead. For Angel Cabrera, the distance between cringing and crumbling was as long as the rough at Oakmont.

Cabrera managed to stay one shot ahead of Tiger Woods to win the 107th U.S. Open, becoming only the second Argentinian since Roberto De Vincenzo to do so. A 16 time winner on the international circuit, Cabrera came into the Open with six top-ten finishes in PGA majors, and having never missed the cut at Oakmont.

It was a great week for Argentina, with Cabrera capturing the U.S. Open, and Manu Ginobili playing a major role in the San Antonio Spurs collecting their fourth NBA championship. The news couldn’t be sweeter for some Argentine government officials, as rumors are circulating about planned protests to disrupt the country’s hosting of the Copa America International Soccer Tournament.
