Michigan and Notre Dame Extend their Rivalry until 2031

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Notre Dame Michigan RivalryWhere will you be in 2031? I am not sure where I’ll be or if I’ll even be around. However, the Michigan Wolverines and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish know where they will be, playing one of the last football games in their newly signed game contract. It seems incredible to think that the teams are planning an annual game so far in advance, but with the contract up between the two teams in 2011, the 20 year extension comes just in time!

In 2031, I will be 50 years old (and turn 51 in December of that year). At 26, I am absolutely terrified thinking about myself at 50. I still have my whole life ahead of me right now, so when I heard about the extension on ESPN’s SportCenter, I couldn’t help but cringe in the thought that I might not be around to see my Wolverines and one of the teams I love watching them play, the Fighting Irish, nearly 30 years from now.

Wake Forest Basketball Coach Dies, Program Left Hanging

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Skip Prosser - Wake Forest CoachThe Wake Forest campus honored and grieved the loss of basketball head coach Skip Prosser, who was remembered in the traditional fashion in which his team had been honored after winning basketball games…with toilet paper fluttering from trees. The tradition is common place on campus, especially on the quad where the majority of students hang out between classes. However, this was no celebration, as Prosser died of an apparent heart attack, on July 26.

Prosser was an exceptional basketball coach who was highly respected by students and staff alike. Under his tutelage, the Demon Deacons were ranked #1 for the first time three years ago. Right now, amidst the grieving, the fate of the team is hanging in the balance, as the next season is approaching at a rapid pace. Amidst the questions of who will replace Prusser remains the question of what will happen to his summer recruitment program and preparation for the following basketball season.

UCLA Assistant Coach Arrested on Burglary Charges

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Eric Scott, UCLA Assistant CoachWhen I think about sports, my first thought is that those involved must be criminals. From there I deduce that the most common thing to do if you are in sports is to pull a Winona Ryder and steal something. I’m sure you think the same thing, right? Of course not! In truth, it consistently surprises me when athletes, coaches, and even sports officials (such as referees) get busted. My thought is that these individuals have it made, so why would they jeopardize that?

With that in mind, we need to ask Eric Scott, an assistant coach for UCLA, what the heck he was thinking. When residents of L.A. turned on station KCBS-2 on Wednesday morning, they were greeted with a picture of Scott’s smiling face and the news he had been arrested with two other men on suspicion of burglary. I was thinking, on my off day, I’d go out and break into a few houses, too. Think they’d notice the wheelchair skid marks?

Baseball

Bonds Bombs in Entire Dodgers Series, Losing Streak Continues Onward– Barry Bonds, just five home runs away from beating the home run record of Henry “Hank” Aaron (a true ball player who didn’t have to use steroids to hit 756 home runs – but don’t get me started on how unfair I think this is), is in a slump. Fellow Giants short-stop, Omar Vizquel, said the slugger just hasn’t been the same since he had an All Star Game party, playing host until the wee hours of the morning, a week and a half ago.

Blogger Ejected From NCAA Baseball Tournament Game

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

Fellow bloggers, meet the NCAA, today’s public enemy #1.

Brian Bennett, a reporter with the Courier-Journal in Louisville, KY was ejected from last Sunday’s NCAA baseball regional tournament game between the University of Louisville and University of Miami (FL) for blogging the results of the game. What was the big deal? The following memo from the NCAA office that was sent to the press box earlier in the day:

The College World Series Media Coordination staff along with the NCAA Broadcasting group needs to remind all media coordinators that any statistical or other live representation of the Super Regional games falls under the exclusive broadcasting and Internet rights granted to the NCAA’s official rights holders and therefore is not allowed by any other entity. Since blogs are considered a live representation of the game, any blog that has action photos or game reports, including play-by-play, scores or any in-game updates, is specifically prohibited. In essence, no blog entries are permitted between the first pitch and the final out of each game.

The link highlighted above is an actual transcript of Bennett’s blog, and an accompanying piece with his thoughts on the ejection. The newspaper is considering legal action against the NCAA, and classifies the ejection as a violation of First Amendment rights.

It’s understandable why the NCAA would feel pressure to eliminate blogging from press boxes, because they wouldn’t want to offer an alternative to watching the game outside of what ESPN paid good money for. At the same time, there’s not a lot of comp from bloggers to cut ESPN or the NCAA’s money that short. as this particular blogger feels.

A disparaging rant? We’re never short on those. A multimedia financial meltdown? Not likely from your friendly neighborhood blogger.
