Weekend Review + a look ahead

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

It has been a busy weekend for sport, with 3 key matches coming to a close on a global scale:

Formula 1 - The Flying Fin - Kimi Raikonnen, pips British rookie Lewis Hamilton and last years champion Fernando Alonso in the final race at Interlagos, Brazil. Kimi had not lead the championship since the first race, however he finished with a phenominal 2nd half to the season and beat the feuding McClarens who drove themselves out of the points repeatedly during the final races in a bid to best each other.

MLB - the Boston Red Sox defeated Cleveland 11-2 in game 7 of the ALCS, firing them into the World Series. They scored and impressive 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th to clinch the victory.

Rugby World Cup - South Africa become world champions defeating England 15-6, amid the outcries of a “dubious” decision by the video referee that disallowed what appeared to be an England try, (which would have, at the time, cut the score from 9-3 to 9-8) the springboks captivated a dream world cup in which they cruised through the entire competition, and ending Englands dream of back to back world cups, and the opportunity to do so by winning 3 consecutive games as the underdogs (beating Australia in the 1/4 finals and home nation France in the semi’s)

Beckham’s First L.A. Night a Success

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

David BeckhamDavid Beckham helped his new football team, the L.A. Galaxy win the first game in which he played. The Galaxy beat the D.C. United 2-0 with one goal scored by the British superstar player. His first appearance in the MLS was playing for the Galaxy in the SuperLiga semifinals. While there was a lot of speculation about how Beckham would do in his first American football performance his team and fans were more than pleased with the way things transpired.

Beckham scored during a free kick that took place within the first 30 minutes of the game. He also had a hand in the second goal, passing to Landon Donovan, who scored, and receiving an assist for his efforts. This was scored a little over a quarter of an hour into the game making the score 2-0 and sealing the win for the Galaxy.

Detroit Wins Twice and Tony Stewart wins at the Glens!

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

williams.jpgToday was a big day in the Evans household. I had my remote set to flip between three different sporting events. At 1:00 PM EST, the Detroit Tigers took on the Oakland A’s. If they happened to win this game, they had the chance to move half a game ahead of Cleveland for 1st place in the AL’s Central Division. Of course, the Tribe would also have to lose their game today to the New York Yankees for this to occur. With the Yankees playing some damn good baseball lately that seemed like the inevitable outcome.

Meanwhile, Football’s pre-season began in Detroit when the Lions took on the Bengals. I’m not a fan of either team (though as a little tyke my heroes were Icky and Boomer – I perfected my “Icky Shuffle”). However, seeing football on TV was exciting enough to get me all riled up. Besides, being in Michigan, I feel minor loyalty to the Lions, even if they have had some rather “sucky” streaks in the past few years. The exhibition game just happened to be on my Detroit CW station with the Tigers on one of my other, local stations.

Are You Ready for some Football?

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

NFL FootballAs I sit here watching the Detroit Lions play an exhibition game against the Cincinnati Bengals, I can’t help but feel a little excitement at the prospect of Football Season’s fast approach. The first game of the 2007-2008 season begins on September 6, 2007, which is less than a month away.

I don’t know about you, but Football Season is my favorite season of the year. The whole universe seems to shift its attention to sports (it doesn’t matter whether its college or professional). Everyone has their favorite team or teams. Everybody has a sense of who should win a game in order for their team to better advance and make their way inevitably to the end of the season playoffs (or bowl game placement for college football).

Brazil Sole Bidder for 2014 World Cup in South America

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

World Cup Football FieldWhere will the World Cup be in 2014? If all goes well, it might head across the Atlantic to Brazil. The South American country, which is known for its outstanding football team, has officially placed a bid to host the World Cup for the 2014 FIFA Games. The bid was submitted this week in Zurich before a FIFA board. A special Brazilian delegation first spent 30 minutes visually presenting their bid. Then they turned a dossier with further details over to the FIFA board to examine and make a determination on their request.

Now, it is up to FIFA to decide whether they are going to allow Brazil to host the games. Before officials for the primary world football as (more…)

Part Two: The Top Five Baseball Players of All Time - #3-#5

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Hank AaronIn Part One of the Best Baseball Players of All Time, I discussed the #1 and #2 Players, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth. This second section discusses baseball players I believe to be in the top five ranked #3-#5. These individuals exhibit exceptional ability to play and legendary status with fans of the game. So, let’s get right into the list and find out which players made it.

#3 – Hank Aaron – This is the man that all the muss and fuss is about. For Barry Bonds to overcome Hank Aaron’s record and be placed in front of him is an absolute travesty. By not admitting or denying the use of steroids while under oath, Bonds has silently admitted guilt. By letting Bonds into the record books for a “steroid-induced” number of homeruns, the record of Hank Aarons, a man who used no supplemental assistance to aid his game, is being spit on.

The Showdown that took 113 Years to Take Place

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Viktoria BerlinIt was 113 years ago when the Viktoria Berlin football club was named the winner by default of the league final they were supposed to play. This was due to the fact that their competitors, the Hanau club was unable to travel to Berlin to play Viktoria due to lack of funds. Hanau, which is located in southwest Germany, was 400 kilometers away from Viktoria Berlin. The results of the 1894 competition meant that Viktoria took home the win and the title for the league by default.

It took just 113 years for the Hanau team to attempt to bring their loss and the Viktoria team to justice. Since the victory went to Viktoria, throughout the years, the Hanau team officials have received multiple complaints. That is why officials decided to find a solution that was not only amicable, but was one fans of both teams could live with, despite the fact that all of them were not even alive 113 years ago.
