Approaching the End: Bonds Homers Twice, Is Three Runs Away
No sooner had I mentioned that Barry Bonds was in a major slump that he had to go and show me up. So, he was 0 in 21 at bats, which is a pretty bad record for someone who is trying to attain the status of Homerun King. Then he decided to go and get two homers in one game at Wrigley Field in Chicago. These were homers 752 and 753 on his quest to beat Hank Aaron’s record for the most career home runs in the history of baseball.
I have to repeat myself when I say that I think Bonds is highly overrated. I’m not overly thrilled at the implications of what he’s done to become so great and yet I feel that making him the new man to beat over Aaron is a slap in the face to those who were genuine and true to baseball for so many years. Color me imperfect for my view of Bonds, but that’s just how I feel.
Even the top Sports commentators, reporters, and writers feel as though Bonds’ accomplishments seem a bit sad and even pathetic. This will be a hollow victory for Bonds when/if he hits the 756 mark, to beat Aaron’s 755 homerun record. This will also be a sad day for those who loved Aaron as his record is thrust aside in honor of someone who is believed to have abused steroids and then lied about it.
So, Bonds can have his hollow victory. He can have his record. All we can have is memories of the past and hope for a new future with a new homerun king who will take away the glory from Bonds. It’s not like his homeruns helped anyway. The Giants still were beat by the Cubs, in a 9-8 victory. It just served to make all of us more depressed as we dread the day when Bonds is crowned…the new homerun (sic) king
Tell me what you think. Does Barry Bonds deserve to be the new homerun king or does the record need to stay with Aaron? Leave me your thoughts with a comment to this post.
